Poor Paddy

My favourite cat at ffrc is Paddy Cakes, although he and his brother Paddy purr look very similar, cakes is a lighter orange and you see him alot more on the cam. My favourite things is the people watching he does. He finds a spot and sits and watches everyone going about their tasks and if there are no people, he watches the other cats.

He has a cold at the moment and I just want to gather him up and snuggle on the sofa and watch tv with him. I think he'd love people watching on there while he's ill.I really wish I lived closer so I could adopt the Paddy brothers, I would love to groom them then let them sleep anywhere they wanted (the choose some strange places to sleep as well), I would have to shell out on a cat wheel however as I don't think paddy cakes would find it a home without one.

Although part of me would love to meet cakes and give him a kiss I can't wait for someone to fall for him like I have and give him and his brother a furever home. I think the two of them would make any house a home in an instant.

Oh and don't forget to vote everyday.

Weekend without Kittiens

I have spent the weekend with my boyfriend rather than watching the FFRC cam but I haven't forgotten to vote, please do vote if you are able.

Will be back watching the cam tomorrow but I did catch up with boxes or bunches of fun. I do love the chase the mouse toy. One of my favourite's Paddycakes loved it, I haven't seen him get so excited which was nice to see.

Hope to have a quiet week this week, and also hope the snow melts but I'll be wearing my wellies until it does as it will be slushy for a while yet.

Bad day turned awww

I had a bad day yesterday, because of communication error I went to the wrong place for an interview. Hopefully it can be reorganised but as you can imagine I was in a foul mood and I even bought some chocolate on the way home.

So I sat down and thought I'd watch the FFRC cats to cheer up and they were putting a play pen out. I turned on just in time to see lovely Doce the kitten out playing with the cats for a little while. It was lovely to see the cats looking in on him and him trying to pounce on them even though there was netting in the way. He is full of joy and life and you can't help but smile.

So thanks again to Doce, you turned my mood around.

My latest obsession

In late November one of the pod casts I listen to all the time started doing a live video stream as they recorded. It was on a Tuesday night at a responsible time so I decided to have a watch. it finished around 10pm and so I decided next time I would watch in bed on my new tablet. So next day I set about downloading the android app for U stream so I could watch.

I had not used U stream directly before so I thought I'd find a live stream to get myself acquainted with the ins and outs. Looking at the categories I noticed Animals and thought that would be perfect. Clicking on it, one of the top streams was FFRC a cat rescue centre in Ohio where the cats roam the centre. I clicked it on and 4 hours later I was still watching it.

I came to learn the chatters names, although I have never chatted there myself as the tablet is annoying for typing on. I learnt just how much time they spent watching the cats and thought wow some people have too much time on their hands. Then I began to see that family they created, the rescue cats were their virtual pets, they worried for them, they cried when something went wrong and cried with happiness when adoptions happened and I grew to respect and love every one of them. I have to mention that this is just day one of watching.

I logged off quiet early so I didn't get to meet the glue that holds the centre together, that happened the next day. I turned on and there was a lovely lady chatting to people on the cam, this is Jacci. She owns and runs (together with a fantastic team of volunteers) the centre and all the chatters love her. She has such dedication, she gets up with sun (well before) and goes to bed late and sometimes has to get up in the middle of the few hours she gets to care for a sick cat or a broken camera. Yet she still greets everyone with a smile and for a special few a great big hug. She knows every single cat, and can tell them all apart which is amazing as some have very few differences, but she is rewarded back when boxes times comes along.

First time I heard the word boxes I thought, it was just a time for the cats to play in boxes. What I came to learn is that the good chatters (and occasional lurker) sends the centre things in the boxes before the cats get to play with them (though sometimes the cats don't wait and climb in before hand). I am constantly amazed at the generosity of the people. I have been close to tears along with Jacci when someone has sent something she so desperately needed. I must admit that I have sent a donation when I got some money I was not expecting, the first thing I thought is, I must share my good fortune with Jacci. So I can understand why people help.

I have my favourite cats of course but I'll save that for another blog post but the reason for this one is that every year they are part of a competition for money where the most votes gets the prize. It is an amazing $10,000 this time round and so far they are in the lead but, the gap is closing up and they need a little help. If you have time please go to www.tinyurl.com/ffrcvote in the search bar type friends of felines and the state is OH they are in Defiance and press vote. If you bookmark the page, next day it will place FFRC in the previously voted for section so you won't need to search once you've done it once. You can vote once a day and it is a lovely way of helping out without it costing you any more money. Though if you ever wanted to donate I'm sure Jacci would send Kitty kisses your way.

I hope one day to do a tour round America with my partner and I now know at least one stop will be to see the Kitty's at FFRC.

A poem

A first look at this world see a messed up place
where evil wears an everyday face
look a little deeper and you will find
goodness hidden within mankind

A virtual hug, a kind thing you say
thinking of them when you pray
A donation when you have little to spare
these kind things are not rare

So please don't think this world is unkind
kindness is there, if you look you will find.

Dedicated to those who don't believe everything they see in the media

Young Rewired State 2012 - From an outsider

So this weekend I attended an event that I've heard about for years. See my partner and his son have been involved with yrs for years they always come back full of ideas and stories. I was curious I will admit but I'm not a coder in fact coding frustrates the heck out of me, as my brain loves to create but hates to learn. This year however it was my partners son's last year as a participant so I thought I would love to see him present his idea's live instead of over the net so I floated the idea that I'd be interested in going. Five seconds later I was signed up and going, this is the first sign of how passionate yrs people are, they want more people involved.

So most of the week I couldn't go, but Thursday I went along to the centre that they were both signed up for. See yrs is a whole UK thing not just a London thing which thrills me no end (I get annoyed when events just go to London and say a UK tour) for the first 4 days of the week it's at their local centre, where they meet other under 18's and they put together an app or website using at least open piece of open data. Some have been coders for a while but some have never coded in their lives now it's those kids that amazed me that Thursday as they showed me what they had done, that was the moment I caught the passion of yrs.

The weekend, well it was amazing you had some older kids that had teamed up with the younger ones to create things that were out of this world but not in every case were the older ones the coders. A team that stood out in the early round were from BMC in London. There stood two older lads and two younger lads (seven and eight if I remember correctly) and instantly the microphone was handed to the younger lads, see they were the ones who helped the older ones produce their idea and a big shout out to Iain, that lad is amazing and I can't wait to see what he does next year, he has the confidence of ten people and is using it constructively, he is on my one to watch list.

So there are so many blogs and videos out there with a list of the winners This being one so I won't list them I want to jump ahead to Sunday morning, where I'm sitting in a room with two lads from Brighton, both are 12 and both are quizzing me on why I'm there and what I've done this week to help. I have been asked less questions in job interviews I can tell you. Then when I mentioned I'd tried to learn to code, they were suggesting sites I could go to, languages that may be better to start with etc. It wasn't until an hour after the conversation I thought, they were 12 and I was being taught and recruited by them for next year and I took a step back, they had caught the passion too and wanted to make sure that others had. I have no doubt that every kid at that weekend will be back and that all the 18 year old's will sign up as mentors, in fact I know some have as the sign up page is already up.

I have caught the passion and I want to help, in any way to make this event brilliant and to spread the passion across the country and beyond, especially to Ireland who didn't have any kids this year so extra push to get the passion across the water and see you next year.
